Underwater Hockey (UWH)
Underwater hockey, yes underwater hockey! It is exactly what it sounds like, a fast-paced, adrenaline-packed, underwater game where two teams play hockey at the bottom of a pool, using short sticks to push a weighted puck into the opposing goal. Players wear fins, masks, snorkels, and gloves, and the game is built around quick dives, short bursts of speed, passing, positioning, and teamwork.
I started playing in February 2025 with the University of Illinois Underwater Hockey Club, and I have been OBSSESSED with it since. (We've also been mentioned in the Daily Illini) It is really one of those interesting niche sports as it requires not only full body movements but also your awareness to your surroundings, including above and below you! I have played A LOT now and participated in multiple tournaments across the U.S., the UWH community is SUPER FUN and NICE. It is chaotic, exhausting, and one of the most fun communities I have joined at the University of Illinois! Below are some of my footage from my UWH plays and tournaments.
Curious? Check out a quick video down below and find out the nearest UWH club to you with this map!
